Camp Counselor, Obaro Village: Rooted & Rising Summer Youth Academy

The Camp Counselor plays a vital role in delivering a vibrant, culturally grounded, faith-based STEAM experience for middle school youth participating in Obaro Village: Rooted & Rising Summer Youth Academy. Camp Counselors support daily program operations, provide direct supervision and engagement with youth, and help ensure a safe, welcoming, and culturally affirming environment that aligns with the mission and values of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and the Office of Black Catholic Ministry.

Essential Functions

Youth Engagement & Program Support

  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth participants
  • Lead and support hands-on faith-based education, STEAM activities, and cultural programming
  • Assist with daily camp setup, transitions, cleanup, and activity supervision
  • Support camper check-in and check-out procedures to ensure a safe and organized environment
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and youth-centered atmosphere that encourages participation and creativity
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and healthy relationships with youth
  • Attend required pre-camp training and participate in post-camp evaluations

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Actively supervise youth and adhere to established supervision ratios
  • Follow all Archdiocese of Indianapolis policies, Child Safety standards, and American Camp Association guidelines
  • Assist with site safety checks, incident reporting, and emergency procedures
  • Support positive, culturally responsive behavior management practices
  • Report concerns, incidents, or safety issues promptly to the Camp Director

Family & Community Engagement

  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with parents/guardians as needed
  • Support community partnerships and assist with culminating events and activities
  • Serve as a point of contact for basic camper needs and concerns, escalating issues appropriately

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, youth development, social services, or a related field (or progress toward degree)
  • At least 1 year of experience working with youth in a camp, school, ministry, or community setting

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and Black Catholic Ministry
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and de-escalation skills
  • Ability to actively supervise youth and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Organized, dependable, enthusiastic, and flexible
  • Passion for youth development, STEAM learning, and culturally responsive ministry

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of Archdiocese of Indianapolis Child Safety Training
  • Ability to comply with the Archdiocese of Indianapolis Code of Conduct
  • Background screening required
  • Reliable transportation to camp locations
  • Experience with photography or social media is a plus

Work Environment

Camp Counselors work in both indoor and outdoor settings and must be able to stand, walk, and actively engage with youth throughout the day. The role requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds, tolerate moderate to loud noise levels, and adapt to varying weather conditions while maintaining constant attention to youth safety.
