Gospel Choir Director

St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, part of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, is seeking a passionate and skilled Gospel Choir Director to lead and grow a dynamic choir ministry rooted in the rich traditions of Black gospel music. The Gospel Choir Director will provide musical leadership, piano accompaniment, and spiritual encouragement to support vibrant worship and congregational engagement.

This role supervises a group of volunteer choir members and plays an active role in choir member recruitment and development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Musical Direction: Select, arrange, and direct gospel music that aligns with weekly liturgical themes, particularly for the 10:30 a.m. Mass.
  • Rehearsals: Plan and lead monthly choir rehearsals and prepare the choir for scheduled Masses.
  • Piano Accompaniment: Provide piano accompaniment for rehearsals and performances; arrange vocal parts as needed for solos and harmonies.
  • Vocal Coaching: Lead warm‑ups and offer vocal guidance to strengthen individual and ensemble technique.
  • Mentorship & Ministry: Foster spiritual growth, unity, and community among choir members through prayer and encouragement.
  • Leadership: Supervise volunteer choir members and support recruitment efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Strong background in Black gospel music, including traditional and contemporary styles.
  • Proficiency in piano performance, sight‑reading, and vocal arrangement.
  • Demonstrated vocal ability and experience conducting choirs.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to inspire and unify singers with varying skill levels.
  • Commitment to the mission and spiritual values of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish.
  • Experience in church music ministry or community choir leadership preferred.
  • Advanced piano proficiency preferred.
