The Archdiocese of Indianapolis is seeking a mission‑driven, collaborative, and experienced Catholic leader to serve as Chancellor, a key advisor and delegate of the Archbishop responsible for coordinating internal operations and ensuring the effective administration of the archdiocese.

About the Role

The Chancellor serves as a senior leader within the Archdiocese, overseeing major administrative functions, supervising key directors, and ensuring that the work of the Curia advances the mission of the Church. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong pastoral sensitivity, excellent organizational leadership, and a deep love for the Catholic faith.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and proper maintenance of canonical records in the Archives
  • Serve as ecclesiastical notary
  • Participate in the Archbishop’s leadership team and facilitate leadership team meetings
  • Guide the development of mission statements, goals, strategies, and policies for the archdiocese
  • Lead the creation and monitoring of the archdiocesan pastoral plan
  • Facilitate meetings of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council
  • Represent the archdiocese at local, state, and national levels
  • Oversee planning and implementation of major archdiocesan projects and initiatives
  • Serve as the Archbishop’s delegate on task forces and major events
  • Collaborate with the Vicar General and CFO on the annual budget
  • Ensure proper investigation and resolution of reports of unethical behavior
  • Manage the Catholic Center’s operational calendar, including delays and closures
  • Review award nominations and board membership recommendations
  • Approve requests for external speakers and professional development
  • Oversee the ECHO Program (University of Notre Dame)
  • Review and approve job requisitions in alignment with the organizational chart
  • Chair the Legacy Gala planning committee and the Capital Projects Committee
  • Serve as an ex‑officio member of the Council of Priests, College of Deans, and Archdiocesan Review Board
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Archbishop

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in theology, religious education, or a related field (required)
  • Minimum of 10 years of administrative and leadership experience (required)
  • Must be a professed and practicing Catholic in good standing with a demonstrated love for the Church

Working Conditions

  • Evening and weekend work is common
  • Regular travel within the archdiocese
