Coordinator of Disabilities Ministry

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis is seeking a Coordinator of Disabilities Ministry who will provide leadership that serves persons with disabilities through the evangelization and catechetical ministries of our Church.

In this role you will create awareness and pathways of inclusion for persons with disabilities in parish life, coordinate community events for Special Religious Education and Discipleship (SPREAD) groups, and participate in the work of the Department of Parish Leadership in supporting and forming pastors and their leaders to make disciples at their parishes.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Catechist with a love for and experience working with persons with disabilities and SPREAD leaders, as well as strong organizational and teamworking skills.

Essential Functions

  1. Serve as coordinator of SPREAD groups in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis; including ordering materials, helping establish new groups, training catechists and serving as a resource to other specialized faith formation groups. 
  2. Assist the Department of Parish Leadership with events, and build relationships with parish leaders through annual parish visits as well as email and phone check ins.
  3. Coordinate community events, including the Dinner Dance, Disabilities Awareness Mass, Summer Retreat and Advent Day of Reflection, and others as the opportunity arises.
  4. Assist parishes in establishing a Parish Access Contact Person or Inclusion Team who collaborate with parish ministries to promote inclusion of persons with disabilities in parish life.
  5. Identify specialized or adaptive catechetical resources as well as provide formation and training opportunities for leaders and catechists.
  6. Serve as an advocate for the Deaf Catholic community.

Position Specification/Requirements

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to articulate complex, and at times emotionally charged issues with clarity, empathy, and accuracy. 
  2. A thorough understanding of the teachings of the Catholic Church and the directives of the Magisterium, and a vision for evangelization and catechesis for persons with disabilities. 
  3. Strong administrative and organizational skills, especially in the areas of strategic planning, financial management, and leadership development. 
  4. Ability to work collaboratively and foster teamwork.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with Deaf culture is preferred.
  6. A bachelor’s degree or coursework in special education as well as a bachelor’s degree in theology is preferred.
  7. A demonstrated ability in inclusive education, and at least 5 years of experience in teaching and/or administration is required.
  8. Must be a professed and practicing Catholic and must be able to understand and to comply with the Archdiocese of Indianapolis Code of Conduct.
  9. Must be able to successfully complete the Archdiocese of Indianapolis Child Safety training.
  10. Background screening and valid driver’s license required.
  11. Evening and weekend work is regularly necessary, and travel (mainly within the Archdiocese) is required.
