Part-Time Food Services Assistant

The Food Service Assistant (FSA) supports the planning, preparation, and serving of well-balanced, nutritious meals for families residing at Holy Family Shelter. This position assists and fills in for the Food Services Manager when needed and helps ensure the food service program operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with health regulations. The FSA also helps with food ordering, donation pickups, kitchen organization, and maintaining a clean and welcoming dining environment for families.
Essential Functions
- Meal Preparation and Service
- Assist in planning, preparing, and serving nutritious, appealing meals for residents.
- Support menu preparation for each week, including menus for volunteer cooks.
- Supervise and assist residents during meal pick-up, ensuring a safe and respectful dining environment.
- Prepare and serve meals independently when the Food Services Manager is unavailable.
- Food Procurement and Inventory
- Assist in ordering food and kitchen supplies from vendors such as Hodson, Gordon’s, Sam’s Club, and Kroger.
- Help receive, organize, and properly store all food donations and deliveries.
- Support pickup of donated food from partners including Midwest Food Bank, Cardinal Ritter, Kroger, and Gleaners.
- Sanitation and Safety
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, pantry, dining room, and storage areas.
- Ensure all food handling and storage meet Marion County Board of Health standards.
- Follow all food safety, cleaning, and sanitation procedures.
- Resident Engagement and Nutrition Education
- Support the Food Services Manager in implementing nutrition education for families and children.
- Promote healthy eating habits among families experiencing homelessness.
- Administration and General Support
- Maintain accurate records of food inventory, donations, and meals served.
- Treat all residents, volunteers, and coworkers with dignity and respect.
- Perform other duties as needed to ensure the smooth operation of the food services program and shelter.
Requirements:
- EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Two years of experience in food service or kitchen management preferred.
- ServSafe Certification required or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.
- SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND/OR ABILITIES
- Successful background screening required.
- Professional demeanor.
- Sensitive to needs and issues of homeless families.
- Experience in residential homeless services preferred.
- Ability to supervise adults and children required.
- Bi-lingual (English /Spanish) preferred.
- Experience/ability to respond appropriately to cultural differences with children & adults, staff, and the community is required.
- Completes required documentation in timely manner.
- Attends all staff and supervisory meetings and attends recommended training programs and conferences.

Working Environment
- Equipment: Ability to perform general operations in computer word processing, database entry, fax, copier, telephone, and other office machines is required. Ability to operate kitchen and cleaning equipment.
- Environment: Emergency shelter for homeless families. Due to the nature of Holy Family Shelter, job responsibilities are subject to change. Employee must be able to adapt to new procedures as introduced. Work in the kitchen is: performed in a time sensitive, fast paced, setting with medium to high noise level, with exposure to cleaning chemicals and various temperature changes, and exposure to common food allergens.
This position has the potential to become full-time based on the program's needs.
