Events Calendar

While the universal Church observes a year focusing on St. Paul, we are reminded that it was a missionary journey like that of Paul that brough Bishop Simon Bruté to Vincennes, Indiana so many years ago. And while an international synod of bishops focuses on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church" this fall, we will celebrate efforts like St. Theodora's bring the teaching of our Church and the face of Jesus to southern and central Indiana.

Below are some of the special events that will celebrate this Jubilee Year.

175th Anniversary Mass

Old Cathedral at VincennesThe Archdiocese’s 175th Anniversary Celebration will culminate with a Mass at 3 p.m. on May 3, 2009 at the Lucas Oil Stadium. Everyone is welcome! We expect as many as 30,000 people to attend. Nineteen bishops and abbots will be participating including Cardinal George from Chicago.

The doors to the stadium will open to the public at 1 p.m. Choirs will perform before the Mass starting at 1:30 p.m. We will also be showing videos that will highlight the history of the Archdiocese before the Mass. The Mass will begin promptly at 3 p.m. and should last roughly two hours.

Pilgrimage to Vincennes

Old Cathedral at VincennesIn honor of the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, OSB, will be leading a series of spiritual pilgrimages to Vincennes, Indiana. This historic city was the original location of the cathedral and home of Bishop Simon Bruté, first Bishop of the Diocese of Vincennes, which pre-dated the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. In Vincennes the pilgrims will tour the original cathedral, visit the crypt church and the remains of Bishop Bruté, celebrate the Holy mass and enjoy a meal. The archbishop hopes that these pilgrimages will be opportunities for prayer, conversion and a deeper understanding of the origins of our Catholic heritage in Indiana.

Dates for the Pilgrimages:
  • Saturday, March 7 | For High School Youth
  • Wednesday, March 18 | For Adults and Young Adults
