Providence Sister Marilyn Trobaugh served as an educator and in administration

Providence Sister Marilyn Trobaugh (formerly Sister Robert Louise), a member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died on May 18 at the Mother Theodore Hall on the campus of her religious community’s motherhouse. She was 89.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on May 29 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

Sister Marilyn was born on Feb. 18, 1936, in Lafayette, Ind. She entered the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 4, 1954, and professed final vows on Aug. 15, 1961.

Sister Marilyn earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and a master’s degree in elementary education at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.

During her 71 years as a member of the Sisters of Providence, Sister Marilyn ministered in Catholic education for 14 years in Indiana. She later worked in secretarial and business positions for 17 years for nursing homes and rehabilitation centers in Indianapolis. Starting in 1997, Sister Marilyn returned to her community’s motherhouse where she ministered in administration for 27 years. In 2024, she dedicated herself entirely to prayer.

In the archdiocese, Sister Marilyn ministered at St. Philip Neri School in Indianapolis from 1958-59, in the Central Business Office at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods from 1997-2017 and as the treasurer of Lourdes Hall at the motherhouse from 2017-24.

She is survived by a brother, William Trobaugh of Sebastian, Fla.
