Benedictine Father Louis Mulcahy ministered as a chaplain and at Monte Cassino Shrine

Benedictine Father Louis Mulcahy, a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad, died on Aug. 24, at the monastery. He was 97.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Aug. 28. Burial followed at the Archabbey Cemetery.

Father Louis was born on Jan. 26, 1928, in Lynn, Mass., and was given the name Thomas Francis at his baptism.

While in the U.S. Navy in the 1950s, he studied at the IBM Institute of the International Business Machine Corporation (IBM) in Washington, D.C., and did research for the Naval Bureau of Personnel. After being discharged from the Navy, he worked for IBM in Boston.

Father Louis entered religious life at St. Benedict Priory in Harvard, Mass., professing vows in 1981. He transferred to Saint Meinrad Archabbey in 1984. Father Louis attended Boston College and Weston School of Theology, both in Boston, before earning a master of divinity degree at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in 1988.

He was ordained a priest on May 20, 1989.

Father Louis served at Saint Meinrad as director of mail services, monastery guest master, coordinator of research at Abbey Press, spiritual director of oblates, custodian of the Our Lady of Monte Cassino Shrine and associate chaplain for Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Ind., in the Evansville Diocese.
