Lisa’s* life was spiraling out of control. Addicted to drugs and living for her next high, Lisa was in a dark place. Lisa hit rock bottom when her drug abuse led her to lose custody of her 3-year-old daughter spend a month in jail.

Becky’s Place offered a way for Lisa to address the issues underlying her addiction and regain custody of her daughter. But she wasn’t ready. After only three weeks, Lisa left Becky’s Place and fell back into drugs. She also became pregnant. She was sent back to jail, this time for four months. At rock bottom once again, this time Lisa was ready to change.

When Lisa came back to Becky’s Place for a second time, it was like a different person walked through our doors. We facilitated visits for Lisa with her daughter and helped her work toward re-establishing her parental rights. When the desire to use crept in, we found something productive for her to do, like employment training, budgeting classes, cooking and cleaning. Lisa would do whatever it took to keep her mind on the future. She was clean and healthy – for herself and her unborn baby – for the first time in years. We rejoiced when Lisa welcomed a healthy baby boy a few months after arriving. She didn’t wait around long to create a stable life for herself and her son. She quickly got a job and was soon able to afford an apartment of her own.

Lisa broke the vicious cycle of addiction and became the mom we all knew she could be. She created a stable career path for herself, going from working at a fast food place to working in home health care. She moved out of the little apartment into a four-bedroom house of her own with her amazing husband and their blended family of six healthy kids.
