STILLER, Mary L., 97, St. Mary-of-the-Knobs, Floyd County, Nov. 28. Mother of Karen Nethery and Robert Stiller. Grandmother of four. Great-grandmother of three.

Providence Sister Rosemary Rafter served in Catholic schools and parishes

Providence Sister Rosemary Rafter (formerly Sister Rose Clare), a member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died on Dec. 1 at Providence Healthcare at the motherhouse. She was 93.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Dec. 11 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

Sister Rosemary was born on May 1, 1932, in Bloomington, Ill. She entered the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1951, and professed final vows on Aug. 15, 1958.

Sister Margaret earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, a master’s degree in education at Indiana State University in Terre Haute and a master’s degree in counseling psychology at the former George Williams College of Aurora University in Chicago.

During her 74 years as a member of the Sisters of Providence, Sister Rosemary served as an educator in Catholic schools for 22 years in Illinois, Indiana and New Hampshire. She also served in administration with the Sisters of Providence and in parish ministry.

In the archdiocese, Sister Rosemary served at the former St. Ann School in Terre Haute from 1957-58 and in different roles in the administration of the congregation from 1972-77.

Surviving are two sisters, Sue Rafter and Joan Whitehouse, both of Terre Haute, and a brother, Eugene Rafter of Lady Lake, Fla.
