Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House has a small staff and would not be able to function efficiently without the help of volunteers. Our guests really appreciate your efforts, as one said recently, "This is one of the few times I have seen so many people living out what Christ commanded in service and love."
Would you consider joining our 150+ volunteers, some who have been with Our Lady of Fatima since we opened our doors on Raymond Street in 1950, and be Christ's hands on Earth as we extend hospitality to over 10,000 guests each year?
These are some of the opportunities we have at various times:
MEALS: Preparation and clean up of the dining room for breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets. Our volunteers would prepare beverages, help kitchen staff with some minor prep work, watch the buffet line during the meal, and clean up the dining room after the meal. You also have time to enjoy the meal yourself! This is usually a 2 ½ hour commitment each time. Our volunteer coordinator calls volunteers several weeks in advance and you decide which dates and times work best for your schedule.
SERVING DINNER AT SPECIAL EVENTS: Serving special event dinners is usually a 3 ½ - 4 hour commitment on weekday evenings. These special dinners occur about 10 - 12 times per year, and we usually need between 8-20 volunteers. The volunteers help with final preparations in the dining room, serve a 3-5 course meal, and clean up and reset the dining room at the conclusion of the dinner. You usually also enjoy the served meal. You may accept or decline the date offered when the volunteer coordinator calls.
SET-UP FOR SPECIAL EVENTS: This usually is done in the morning or early afternoon and requires about 2 ½ hours.Set up of dining room for a special event, served dinner. This involves clearing tables of current set up, placing tablecloths, silverware, glassware, etc. on each table as shown to you.
GUEST ROOM PREPARATION:Our housekeeping staff occasionally need assistance when we have a large group leaving and another group coming in on the same day. This assistance would involve checking beds to make sure the sheets have been changed and that the beds are made up neatly, sweeping carpets, and some light dusting. The housekeeper would call you a week or two in advance to see if you would be available.
GREETERS: For some programs, we like to have volunteers act as greeters for the incoming retreatants. Greeters would help retreatants check-in, escort them to their rooms, provide them with any details they might need and be a 'first friendly face' to our guests.
OUTDOOR TRAILS: Each spring and fall we try to check the outdoor trails on the property and make sure they are limb free and properly mulched. We often need assistance in getting mulch on these trails. This is a great group or family project. Times and dates would be coordinated around your availability.
MAINTENANCE: Painting, plumbing, electrical, wood working, and general organizational work. If you have experience/expertise in these areas, our maintenance coordinator would love to hear from you!
MARRIAGE PREPARATION: If you are a couple that has a love for retreats and do not fear speaking to groups about your life experiences, we are always looking for presenters for our Tobit Marriage Preparation weekends.
MUSICIANS: We like to have music at our liturgies as much as possible. Are you gifted in the area of music and willing to give up an hour or so of your time?
OFFICE: Our office staff occasionally needs assistance in answering phones, filing, folding, and preparing mailings.
PARISH PROMOTERS: Guests tell us the most effective way to reach new people for retreats is through a personal invitation. As a parish promoter, you become the liaison between Our Lady of Fatima and the people of your parish; helping others find their way to a deeper relationship with our Lord. With your pastor's permission, you would put Our Lady of Fatima brochures in the brochure racks at your parish and submit bulletin announcements with your name and phone number for more information (we supply the information to you).
All of these volunteer opportunities are coordinated around your schedule. These opportunities are great experiences to have as a couple, a family, a prayer group, or individually. You will meet new people, contribute to a grateful non-profit facility, and have wonderful experiences.
